What is a CPA?

Key points:

  • Accounting is the language of business

  • CPA’s are needed in every industry

In the world of accounting and finance the word CPA carries a lot of weight. But what is it?

A CPA is a Certified Public Accountant. Which means they are authorized and licensed by their state to practice in the accounting profession. CPAs are experts of the rules associated with presenting and understanding financial statements.

They are also experts in any, or all, of the following:

  • Auditing

  • Taxation

  • Financial Compliance

  • Financial Planning and Analysis

CPAs must pass the CPA exam and fulfill other requirements in order to become licensed. This is because CPAs are important members of the financial industry. The general public relies on CPAs to uphold the highest levels or integrity to ensure trust among businesses and the economy.

CPAs perform certain vital regulated services, such as auditing financial statements for publicly traded companies, filing reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

If these are not completed by highly qualified professionals with steadfast ethics it could cause financial crisis throughout the global economy.

CPAs are employed in a wide array of career fields. Many work in public accounting firms who work with businesses all over the world either as auditors, taxation specialists, or financial advisory professionals. CPAs are also employed by just about every public or private business in the world. Everyone needs someone who is well versed in accounting principles.

Warren Buffet even says “Accounting is the language of business.” And accountants speak that language fluently.

So no matter what industry you’re interested in there is most likely a need for a CPA in it in one way or another.

The CPA designation is a mark of excellence and professionalism in the field of accounting. CPAs play a vital role in safeguarding financial integrity, providing strategic guidance, and driving business success. Whether working in public practice, industry, or government, CPAs are integral members of the financial community, trusted to uphold the highest standards of competence, ethics, and integrity.
